Collections are at the heart of a museum, and represent the institution’s main Public Trust responsibility. Participants in this two day workshop will be introduced to the policies, practices, and skills needed to manage museum collections. This course moves from broad concerns relating to public trust, cultural diversity, and planning through to issues in the areas of acquisitions, records management, loans and deaccessioning.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Tim McShane, Instructor
Collections Manager, Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre

After completing grade school at various Canadian Forces bases around Ontario, Tim attended high school and university in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. His BA in Anthropology and Archaeology and his studies in Cultural Resource Management at the University of Victoria started him on his museum career. Tim now has over twenty years’ experience with various heritage institutions across Canada and is currently at the Esplanade Museum in Medicine Hat.

His career focus has been primarily on Collections Management, but also includes exhibit and program development, volunteer management, strategic planning, and social media management. Tim’s involvement in the Alberta Museums Association is long standing and he serves as an Instructor for the Collections Management course in the Certificate in Museum Studies Program.  He has also undertaken contract work for the BC Museums Association.
