It is easy for a community to mark major anniversaries such as the centennial of incorporation as a city with major celebrations that bring the community together. But how does a community remember major events that brought tremendous grief and hardship?

John Kinnear will discuss the recent project in Sparwood to commemorate the Balmer North disaster. He will also review what was done at Hillcrest and Drumheller to commemorate the major mine disasters there. His talk will illustrate people that it’s important to create opportunities to remember those events that, long term, made our communities stronger and more resilient.

John Kinnear is well known in the Elk Valley and Crowsnest Pass for his work in preserving and commemorating our region’s history.
